What have I learned so far...

In two weeks of class, I’ve started to see how the concepts in IT and cybersecurity connect to real-world business decisions and everyday life. From concepts like security policies  to digital transformation, I have really began to deeply understand the growing importance of technology in every corner of our daily lives. The topics below have stuck out to me:

  • IT Domains
    • Learning about the IT domains has helped me understand how the different areas  come together to support a an IT system. These domains include areas like the user domain, LAN, WAN, system/application, and remote access domains. Each of them play an important role in ensuring the smooth operation of an organization’s IT infrastructure.
  • Security Policy Framework
    • The security policy framework has shown me how critical policies, procedures, and guidelines are to an organization’s cybersecurity. A strong framework outlines what is allowed or not, and how to respond to incidents. It’s more than just a document; it’s the foundation of a company’s security culture. I've come to appreciate how policies help align everyone in the organization.
  • Impact of IOT on people and businesses
    • The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) is reshaping how we live and work. Devices from smart thermostats to industrial sensors collect massive amounts of data and connect to networks, often with minimal security. While IoT can enhance efficiency and convenience, it also requires thoughtful planning and robust cybersecurity to protect against data breaches and cyberattacks.
  • and E-commerce
    • One of the most relatable discussions for me was about the shift from physical storefronts to digital platforms. Whether through e-commerce websites or mobile apps, this transformation affects everything from customer experience to data privacy. It's not just about creating a website; it involves securing customer data, understanding the risks, implementing effective marketing, and maintaining reliable IT system.

One of the biggest takeaways from class so far is the realization that humans (user domain) are the weakest link in cybersecurity. Technical tools and systems are important, but without proper planning and strong policies, they won’t be effective. I now see how important it is for companies to have clear rules, training, and digital strategies in place. Learning how IT frameworks and security policies work is helping me think more critically about how businesses operate. When I work in IT, I would understand the importance of combining technical solutions with well-defined policies and strategic planning.
